Port Selkirk Waterfront Development, City of Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada

The City of Selkirk’s dream of revitalizing its historic “Port Roots” has been made possible by the extraordinary commitment of numerous volunteers and the leadership of its City Council. The planning and organization of the project has been spearheaded by the City’s Waterfront Development Corporation which promoted the following objectives:

  • Stimulate downtown development and revitalization

  • Establish a riverfront focus for year-round use

  • Connect the riverfront to people, communities and events along the Red River Corridor

  • Celebrate Selkirk’s river port heritage

The significance of the community’s financial commitment has been instrumental in raising awareness among other levels of government and public agencies about the importance of the waterfront to Selkirk and the region’s future. The site today includes multi-leveled plaza spaces, a terraced amphitheater and stage area, a renovated wharf promenade complete with kiosks spaces and universal access. Completed in the summer of 2003 Port Selkirk has been a popular place for many outdoor events including the ceremonies for the 2003 Western Canada Summer Games.
